My workshop occupies two rooms in the basement of our house, a bench room, and a machine room. The bench room is approximately 15' x 16'. The floor is concrete, and the walls and ceiling are drywalled. I keep my workbench, most of my hand tools, and an assembly table in this room. I installed a french cleat on all four walls in this room. It runs around the perimeter of the room, and all of the tool racks, pegboards, and other fixtures that hold my tools, clamps, etc., hang from the french cleat. This makes it easy to mount things on the wall (no holes to drill...), and also makes it easy to rearrange things, as my workshop evolves. The machine room is connected to the bench room through a double doorway. The machine room is approximately 16' by 22', with a hot water tank and a forced air gas furnace occupying one end of the room. My machine collection includes the following:
All of the machines are hooked up to the dust collector with 4" flex hose right now. Eventually, I plan to move the dust collector into a separate storage room to keep the noise down, and when I do that, I'll install metal ducting for the dust collector to improve it's suction (though it works pretty good right now...). I also intend to move my air compressor into the storage room and run some galvanized iron pipe to the bench room and machine room so that I can conveniently use my air tools anywhere in the shop.
